OUR OVERNIGHT IN RUSSIA - MAGADAN

Our second leg of the day keeps us in Russia as we continue south to Magadan - Siberia.

With 6 aircraft requiring fuel, the turn around in Anadyr took 2 hours, longer than expected thanks to a slow pump on the fuel truck - about 50 liters a minute.

Russian landscapes

We enjoyed a beautiful flight, great flying conditions, perfect weather and smooth landings - we couldn't have asked for a better arrival into Magadan - a slight difference from my 2014 visit when we were greeted by flash floods.

The surprise came when we taxied to our designated parking area - decided upon by the locals. We were the first plane to land and were instructed to leave the runway at taxiway 3, proceed parallel to the runway for a stop between taxiway 1 and 2. As we followed the instructions, we began to encounter streaks of thick tar and large potholes, poorly repaired if repaired at all.

Even AJ wasn't happy with the tar filled runway and its potholes

These potholes were unsettling for us in the Jet but a definite no go for the turboprops.

I refused the parking area for the turboprops and offered a solution. I can't say they were the most receptive to my decision and solution but the conversation eventually worked and the 3 turboprops were parked in front of the tower - my suggested solution.

The drive into town on the longer side - roughly 45 minutes - along what appeared to be a smooth road. "Appeared" is the key word here.
