KOALAS IN THE WILD

Apart from the Kangaroos, for which the island garnered its name, the island is also home to several other famous Australian animals - we were on the search for the koala.

We set out in search of these remarkable animals in the wild. The koala population was diminishing to the point of near extinction in the early 1900s. In hopes of stopping the decreasing numbers, Australia introduced 18 koalas to Kangaroo Island from the mainland in the 1920s as a precautionary measure - today, the koala population on Kangaroo Island is nearly 27,000!

But to spot these quiet marsupials in the wild takes a keen eye. The Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary has just the right trees the koalas love - the eucalyptus tree. Their avenues of eucalyptus trees offered our best chance to see the koalas in the wild as they roam freely.

They are more likely seen up in the trees so look up!

On the lookout for these Australian stars

Carla and Thierry were the back up plan in case we didn't see any!
