TOURING AHMEDABAD

Ahmedabad is not commonly thought of when people mention India but there is quite a bit to see in this part of the country. Ahmedabad is the birth place of Ghandi and where he spent some of his later years in life. This city has also recently become the first UNESCO World Heritage city in India, only a few months ago.

The city is also a dry city, no alcohol can be purchased or consumed by locals. Foreigners are able to purchase a limited quantity and must have a written letter of permission from the government. Once purchased, you are only able to consume the alcohol in the privacy of your hotel room, not in public places including hotel restaurants. Thierry took the time to get a liquor purchase license and set out to buy the group 13 beers and 3 bottles of California wine - the max allotted for a foreigner. This amount would have needed to last 10 days since the permission from government can only be obtained every 10 days - luckily our stay was only 2 nights.

We set out to discover this untouched area of India and experience the traditions and charm of this walled city, dating back to the 15th century. Driving in India adds to the experience  - they say you need 3 things when driving in India - good brakes, good horn and good luck! To add to the chaos, India holds their cows sacred so they are freely roaming the cities and streets unchallenged.

On the agenda to visit is the Hutheesing Jain Temple, the Calico Museum of Textiles, Mahatma Ghandi's ashram and the Adalaj stepwell.

shoes off for entry. No pictures were allowed inside the temple but the ornate carvings continued - it was breathtaking
