WELCOME TO SRI LANKA

Upon landing in Mattala, Sri Lanka, we were greeted by our handler and his crew.

Mattala airport was built by the Chinese and had its’ grand opening in 2013. It is the least busy airport in this part of the world with only one flight per week! You read that right, this beautiful terminal and ramp space for only one flight per week. You can imagine they were happy to see the 6 of us at once.

We were met by our excellent handler, who took great care of us, we efficiently passed through customs and immigration and breezed to our transfers. A welcome change from the delays we experienced in Indonesia and Malaysia. Before long we were in the transfer on our way to our home for the next 3 nights, the Amanwella hotel – a 90 minute transfer from the airport.

The drive was an exciting one. The brave souls that opted for the front seat was not disappointed– white knuckles could been seen throughout the drive. It is essentially a game of driving “chicken.” The largest one always wins but several times during the drive you have cars filling all lanes coming towards you – not to mention the sacred cows strolling the streets, street dogs, monkeys, lizards and wild elephants. First time seeing signs that warned for wild elephants.

We turned onto an unmarked dirt road, through a hidden local village and continued down the path until the oasis that is Amanwella.
